Location and surroundings
The pretty provençal town of Fayence is situated up in the hills behind Cannes (30km to the northwest) and has a pleasant climate even in the middle of summer because of its ideal location at 400m above sea level, between the Mediterranean and the mountains. It is surrounded by many picturesque sites in enchanting countryside. The beautiful lake in the protected reserve at St-Cassien is 15 metres long and only a 10km drive away. A real paradise for those who love to fish or who are in search of quiet. And kids will love the swimming and sandy beaches. The banks of the lake have formed a series of little private bays, on which there a few small restaurants with picnic areas. For culture lovers, the little villages along the Côte d’Azur provide more than enough to keep you busy – festivals, concerts, museums, sites to visit eg the Museum of Modern Art in St Paul de Vence, the Picasso Museum in Antibes. Roman history enthusiasts can visit Fréjus and Saint-Raphaël and see the numerous monuments. And don’t miss out on a boat trip to the islands of Saint-Marguerite and Saint-Honorat, opposite Cannes, with their cloister and variety of flora, or Grasse and a visit to the perfumery (specially for those of you who enjoyed Patrick Süsskind’s Le Parfum), a mountain walk to the village of Mons (a whole day’s outing) or the Siagne gorges where a Roman aqueduct was built 2000 years ago to provide drinking water for the coastal towns. For the sporty, there is gliding, horse riding, water sports, tennis, golf, fishing, hiking, and rock climbing. Fayence is one of the best gliding centres because of the mistral wind and the proximity of the Alps to the Mediterranean. Flights are easy to book. Peace and quiet on the one hand and a full programme of activities on the other – what better recipe for a good holiday?
Shopping possibilities
The centre of Fayence is a 5 minute walk. The village has kept its charm and is not too over-run with tourists. It has a good selection of local shops – a supermarket, butchers, bakery, pastry shop, hairdresser, chemist, banks, all of which can be reached on foot…..as well as two superb restaurants.
