Location and surroundings
This little house is in the middle of the countryside about 3km above the village of St Laurent de Carnols in the Cèze Valley. It is surrounded by ruins, hills, and forests and the view over the valley and the hilltops of the Cévennes is breathtaking. This small corner of Provence is a paradise, but only for those who are not frightened of being isolated and who can live with a minimum of comfort. There is no electricity in the Mazet but a small solar installation supplies enough power for light throughout, for the stereo & computer to work and for charging your mobile phone. The large fridge operates on gas. So does the stove. And for those of you who want a hot shower, be prepared to heat up the water in a big spaghetti pan because the taps only run cold water. And if this hasn’t put you off, at night wild boar and hares come sniffing close to the house. But you will have complete tranquillity in this unforgettable love nest and the clear starlit skies, wild flowers and calm will more than make up for the basic amenities. When you’ve finished your shopping down in the valley, which is heaving with tourists in the summer, you’ll find there’s nothing better than to come home to peace and quiet. The access road is tarmac-ed except for the last 400 metres.
Shopping possibilities
There is a good choice of commercial centres in Bagnols-sur-Cèze, as well as good butchers and fruit and vegetable shops. Goudargues is closer than Bagnols and has a small supermarket, a butchers, two bakeries and a chemists. There are local markets in Goudargues and Bagnols on Wednesday mornings and on Saturdays in Pont St Esprit (about 20 mins drive).
House/Flat description
A mazet is a very small farmhouse. The Mazet las Camparas has metre thick walls which give the necessary protection against the mistral (and has done for centuries) and the doors and windows are fitted with strong metal bars. The terrace is well sheltered from the wind and has lovely views over the valley. The main entrance opens up into the living room, with table, fireplace, wood burning stove and open plan kitchen. The stone walls bear witness to the building techniques used in these simple houses. Also on the ground floor is the bathroom with shower, WC and washbasin. Behind the kitchen a wooden staircase leads to the bedroom which is more of an open gallery overlooking the fireplace. The heat from the wood burning & gas stove and from the fireplace is more than enough to heat the house in the winter. A door from the mezzanine to the outside means you can load and unload your bags directly from your car. Adequate sound from a car stereo with speakers and a CD player and light from 2 car batteries linked to an efficient solar system. In cases of emergency (ie the perfect ‘brushing’) there is a petrol run generator which produces the normal 220 voltage.
